Curing Time: research and workshops  / Angelica Bollettinari

September - Dicember 2022
workshops and research at CASTRO Projects, Roma

Curing Time: CASTRO Studio Program

Curing Time started in the spring of 2022 through a series of walks and poplar-salve-making workshops in Ferrara to explore the history of poplar trees in connection with plastic production in the area.

During the time at Castro, where Angelica Bollettinari underwent a research residency, the research explored processes of phytoremediation of toxic environments through an interview with Dr. Roberto Braglia from the Tor Vergata University Botanical Garden, was informed by undertaking a herbal medicine course at Accademia delle Arti Erboristiche in Rome, and led to the production of a zine accompanied by a poplar salve.

Curing Time: Poplar Salve Making Workshops
HPO Headquarters, Ferrara

Sunday 8th May, “Curing Time / part.2”

Come learn how to make a poplar bud therapeutic salve.
Last February we met to collect black poplar buds in Ferrara; just before they blossom, the buds are full of a sticky resinous substance which has anti-inflammatory properties and is great for the skin. During this workshop we will meet to make a salve together, whilst sharing stories of poplars, bees, water, metamorphosis and collaborations. At the end of the workshop you will have your own tin of poplar salve which you can take home.

This workshop is part of an ongoing research by @angelicabollettinari which reinterprets the Greek myth of Phaeton and the nymphs Heliades, transformed into poplar trees by Zeus on the banks of the river Po.

Workshop time 16:00 - 17:30.
To book please email ciao@resinacollective.com.
Suggested donations €10.

Foraging Walks, Ferrara
22 Feb and 28 Feb 2022:
Picking poplar buds 〰 raccogliendo gemme di pioppo

Two foraging walks organised to pick poplar buds along the Ferrara walls.

Black poplars are one of the most common trees in the Ferrara area. At this time of the year poplar buds, just before they blossom, are full of a sticky resinous substance which has anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties. Branches containing the resinous buds are sometimes blown to the ground by spring windstorms, and can be collected to make medicine.

We picked buds of black Cottonwood poplars and Balsamic poplars - we’ll leave it in olive oil for a month and then make a poplar bud salve later in the spring.
