︎︎︎Final Event/Sharing

Sandi Hudson-Francis and Rosie Morris are the 2022 residents in Ferrara.During their residency Sandi and Rosie will collaborate on a new piece of work titled ‘In All This Between Us’. Inspired by conversation between friends and poets Audre Lorde and Adrienne Rich recorded in 1979, the work will be an endeavor to explore each others’ differences as a way to find deeper understanding, and to reflect upon what might be learned from the 70’s in the context of today. As the artists write, “coming from a position of love and friendship, we will use the text as a framework for exploring how our personal experiences have influenced our practices, whilst exploring themes of class, race, intersectional feminism, family and mothers.”〰
Durante il periodo di residenza, Sandi e Rosie collaboreranno a un lavoro video intitolato 'In All This Between Us'.

Sandi Hudson-Francis
I’m a self-taught multi-disciplinary artist whose practice consists of photography, moving image, sound and sculpture. My work is underpinned by the issues surrounding immigration and how modern day immigrant culture shapes contemporary life. I am sensitive towards questions around belonging and notions of Home and committed to exploring ideas of identity, race, color, class, gender and community. Since 2017 I have been working on a project which explores my Jamaican heritage through the story of 3 different generations of men from Jamaica, which I started with my film ‘Super Sam’ about 92 year old Clovis Salmon. The second film, which has been awarded ACE funding, is currently under development. ‘Super Sam’ was screened at the National Portrait Gallery (2019), selected by Mark Sealy’s (Autograph) to screen at Sheffield Doc Fest, invited to screen at the Barbican and 198 CAL Weareparable film festival (2022). My work ‘FAMILY PORTRAIT’ (2020) was featured in Feminist Library zine “Care in a pandemic”, and ‘CAFE’ (2018) is currently exhibited at the Whitechapel Gallery’s London Open 2022.”Rosie Morris
I am a documentary filmmaker and I graduated from the National Film and Television School in February 2020. I make films that are born from my own personal
experiences, looking to bring the audience into the world of the film to meet people in
it at eye level. In 2022 I represented the UK as a director at Berlinale Talents 2022 where My Blonde GF (Produced by Tyke Films, 16 films, BFI Doc society, The Guardian and OKRE) was selected for the Short Form Station. My 2020 short film Heart Eyes and a World was part of the Official Selection at Aesthetica Short Film Festival, Underwire film festival, and a finalist in the 16 Days and 16 Films competition, hosted by Modern Films and the Kering Foundation. My NFTS graduation film Trees was nominated in the David L Wolper student documentary category at the 2021 International Documentary Awards (IDA) and was acquired by the global short film platform watchargo.com. Trees premiered at FIPADOC International Documentary Festival in the New Talent competition and screened in the emerging strand at Otherfield film festival. In 2016 I was an associate artist at Open School East.

With Ferrara Residency 2018 resina invited five artists of interdisciplinary visual and sonic practices who have explored various facets of Ferrara’s history through their own work, as well as through events and convivial activities.

Ruth Angel EdwardsEmilia BeatrizHenry BradleyJoe CampbellCallum HillBlue Maignien

The residency program is grounded in collaborative practices of learning such as reading groups, feedback sessions, collective meals and other convivial activities, as forms o deceleration and care-taking within the context of art making.

Through a series of events entitled Convivium, we have discussed various political, economic and emotional structures which support or limit artistic work in today’ neoliberal societies. These sessions have been moments in which the artists have reflected on various alternative modalities of cohabitation, through the prism of the Etruscan heritage at the National Archaeological Museum in Ferrara, as well as with Carola Peverati, a feminist activist who was part of the 1970s social movement Wages for Housework. The residency culminated with an exhibition at Porta degli Angeli, a sharing of the artistss’ work-in-progress, titled A Fluid Haze: thought-forms from Ferrara Residency.

A Fluid Haze22 September – 14 October 2018Porta degli Angeli, Ferrara
Curated by: Angelica Bollettinari, Olivia Berkowicz, Valeria Bevilaqua, Lucie Kordacova︎︎︎Residency Program 2018

An exhibition of the work developed over the residency month by the participants of Ferrara Residency 2018: Ruth Angel Edwards, Emilia Beatriz, Henry Bradley, Joe Campbell, Callum Hill, Blue Maignien. With Ferrara Residency 2018 (27 August – 14 October) we invited five artists of interdisciplinary visual and sonic practices who have explored various facets of the city’s history through their own work, events and convivial activities. The presentation at Porta degli Angeli is an opportunity to share the artists’ investigations into sites and stories of Ferrara, as well as experiments within their respective fields of artistic practice.

A Fluid Haze refers to the ecological character of Ferrara, where narratives around the industrialisation of the environment and its aqueous environment have informed the work and dialogues around cycles of waste and renewal; the plastic heritage of the former factory Montedison; sound as a site for cohabitation and care; and countercultures. Visualizations of thoughts, emotions and experiences have been inspired by elusive, yet tangible forms such as the fog, mosquitoes and toxic waste.

The title is also a gesture towards the methodology of the residency itself. A crossing over between self and other, we have worked towards the opening up of our respective disciplines and roles as artists, curators and organisers through sessions of peer review and feedback throughout the month. A Fluid Haze refers to the process of making work itself, in which the residency has sought to value the research process and collective work over the finalisation of art objects themselves.

During Ferrara Residency, the participants had the chance to discover the historical and cultural heritage of Ferrara and its surroundings, to visit exhibitions and cultural spaces in the region, and to engage in a dialogue with local artists, institutions and communities.

The residency program originated from reflections on the role of artists, curators and cultural producers in today’s society, functioning within an art system that reproduces itself through low-paid or unpaid work. Within this precarious context, what does it mean to curate an artistic project and how to do so “with care”?

Throughout the program of redings, visits and talks, we reflected on the need to think together through themes such as work, slowness, vulnerability, the importance of processes of collaboration and modalities of working together in order to provide an alternative to the exhaustion, anxiety and individualism that we experience today under networked capitalism. As a culmination of the residency, from the 27th of September to the 4th of October 2017, Galleria del Carbone and GATE/Porta hosted the exhibition A Bath of Self Esteem showcasing the research developed by the artists during the previous weeks.

Trip #1: Venice Biennale / Giardini
The first group excursion was to Venice, where the group visited the Biennale exhibition at the Giardini.
10.09.2017
Open Projector, 7-10 pm, Studio Carmelino
Ferrara Residency had an open call to screen video-work alongside the residents’ work at the residency HQ, Studio Carmelino. Footage was brought on USB sticks and hard drives and we were able to enjoy an informal evening of the unexpected under the label: “work in progress / short film poems / extracts / longer pieces / film failures / nothing will be turned away”. The evening was curated by artist Joe Campbell.
12.09.2017
Talk: Centro Video Arte in Ferrara. Lola Bonora and Carlo Ansaloni meet Ferrara Residency, 4-6 pm, Studio Carmelino
Ferrara Residency met with Lola Bonora and Carlo Ansaloni, who in 1972 established the Centro Video Arte in Ferrara. Centro Video Arte was a crucial place for the development of video art in Italy, which was active until the early 1990s. Alternating narrative accounts of their experience running the space with screenings of videos and archive material, the meeting aimed to give an overview of the 20 years of activity of the center in Ferrara. Many thanks to the Dundee based Research project REWINDItalia for sharing some reading material with us.

13.09.2017
Ferrara Residency Forum #3, Studio Carmelino
This week’s Forum focused on Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi’s text “The Soul at Work” and Berardi’s lecture “Questions About the Double-headed Monster That Is Destroying Life on the Planet. And How to Deal with It” presented at documenta 14’s ‘Parliament of Bodies’.

16.09.2017
Talk: “Theoria degli Affetti”. Isabella Bordoni and Marco Caselli Nirmal meet Ferrara Residency, 5-7 pm, Studio Carmelino
An informal meeting where Ferrara Residency’s artists and curators learned about the project “Theoria degli Affetti”. In spring 2016, the artist Isabella Bordoni lived for two weeks in the care home ‘Casa Residenza’ for elderly people in Vignola, Italy. After her time spent at the care home, she created and installed sound work through the city narrating the testimonies of the residents and the care workers of Casa Residenza. The photographer Marco Caselli Nirmal contributed to the project documenting the experience.
17.09.2017
Conversation #1 over tea: Wages for Housework in Ferrara
Ferrara Residency met with Gretel Carli and Carolina Peverati who shared their experiences with the Wages for Housework campaign in Italy and their work in feminist collectives in the 1970s and 80s.

18.09.2017
Meet Us at the Yard #2, 7 - 10 pm, Korova Milk Bar
Ferrara Residency’s informal aperitivo where we met and spoke with local artists and curators, or just curious visitors. The idea behind this Meet Us at the Yard #1: “Swing by with your questions, we’ll ask some back, and show your own works and projects. It’s not an exhibition, it’s a sharing: pictures / graphics / prints / designs / flyers / posters / ephemeral work / sculptures / paintings / things badly done / things never done / ideas to discuss / magazines - in hard copies, tattooed or usb files”. The evening was curated by Margherita d’Aloja and Valeria Bevilacqua.
19.09.2017
Conversation #2: Lunch with Franco “Bifo” Berardi, Bologna
A small group of Ferrara Residency participants met up with Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi in Bologna for lunch, where they discussed documenta 14, the cancelled performance Auschwitz On The Beach, Bifo’s film FUTURO COMUNISMO (2017), precarious life of precarious art makers, ‘our’ generation, ‘their’ generation, living in Italy, food and earthquakes.

20.09.2017
Trip #2: Venice Biennale / Arsenale
The second group trip to Venice, where we visited the Biennale exhibition at the Arsenale.

23.09.2017
Meet Us at the Yard #2, 6 - 9 pm, at Il Turco
Ferrara Residency curated an evening of art and conversation in the beautiful courtyard and headquarters of the cultural organisation ilturco. Resident artists Karolina Mikeskova, Lucie Kordacova, Bridie Gane, Josefina Malmegård, as well as the organisers Angelica Bollettinari and Margherita Elliot, created and publicly shared performances and site-specific installations.

3.10.2017
Cherche Encore live from London: live-coding performance

Exhibition Finissage, Galleria del CarboneOne half of Cherche Encore, Hortense Maignien uses “live-coding” as a way of talking about how struggling with one’s mental health affects artistic practice. The evening began with a performance with TidalCycles software and continued with a presentation from Hortense Maignien, who lives in London, via Skype. When a friend, who she met at an electronic music festival two years ago, put her in touch with the live-coding technique through TidalCycles, Hortense found a chance to line up and hook her elusive thoughts and memories, associating them to the sounds produced through live-coding, such as birds flying in the skies of Rome, where she lived as a child. The event was curated by resident artist Lucie Kordacova.

︎︎︎Residency Program 2017

Shared Library 2017To guide and enrich Ferrara Residency with reflections and inputs, we decided to put together a collective and shared library. Each participant brought one or more books to be made available to the others; books related to the theme of the residency or of particular personal importance became the substrate for a rich and fair exchange of textual and metaphorical ideas, literature, languages, images and information which accompanied both private readings of artists, curators and group readings. The temporal characteristic of the shared library was important, as the library only existed in a physical form for one month in September 2017. After the residency the library dissolved, leaving behind the reading list found in this section. The books which constituted the temporary library collection, encompassed a range of topics and contents; from historical material on feminist political struggles, to contemporary accounts of philosophy and theory pertaining to questions on public/private, value, precarity, resistance, love, social reproduction amongst others. Some books were generously loaned to Ferrara Residency by guests and practitioners who were invited to speak with the residents, such as by the artist Isabella Bordoni and the activists Gretel Carli and Carolina Peverati, who lent us original texts from 1970s feminist struggles in Italy.

The entire shared library has been exhibited and accessible to the public at Galleria del Carbone from 27 September to 4 October 2017.
